A Prize Catch
International talent onstage in Abbotsford

How does he do it? When Calvin Dyck, local violinist, teacher, conductor and director of Songs Strings & Steps casts out his line he hooks the very best – young, energetic, passionate, rising world-class musical talent from as far away as Europe.

The catch: From Leipzig, Germany, comes Turkish-Canadian violinist Deniz Tahberer, and from Paris, France, Israeli-South African pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz, and mezzo-soprano Sarah Thery. All three have studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig. They are joining Calvin Dyck for a Special Concert of music by Bach, Bizet and Franck on Sunday, February 24 at 3 p.m. in the South Abbotsford Church.

A feast of great music: It’s perfect entertainment for a relaxing Sunday afternoon. Take a comfortable seat beside a pond of harmonious international talent, listen to refreshing melodies as they float by, and feast on the works of great masters. There’s Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, featuring Calvin and Deniz, a few of Bach’s Arias for Mezzo Soprano, Carmen Fantasy by Bizet, and Sonata in A Major for Violin and Piano by Franck.

Deniz Tahberer: Deniz was born in Turkey where he began his music lessons. In 2005 he was admitted to the Vancouver Academy of Music and in 2009 to the Hochschule für Musik und Theater. He is the winner of many major competitions and scholarships, including the first prize in the 2010 XXIX Michelangelo Abbado Violin Competition in Milan. He has become an outstanding soloist and chamber musician who has significantly enriched musical life in Saxony. When Deniz performs in Abbotsford the audience will experience not only his brilliant playing but the beautiful tones of a violin made right in the Fraser Valley by violin-maker Hermann Janzen who has become famous around the world for his instruments. Ammiel Bushakevitz: Ammiel was born in Jerusalem but began his musical schooling in South Africa where at the age of 16 he experienced his orchestral debut with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra playing Tchaikovky’s Piano Concerto. Since then he has continued studies in Europe, performed at many festivals and been the recipient of over thirty awards and prizes. He is also an active musicologist and specializes in researching Franz Schubert and Richard Wagner.

Aurelius Duo: Deniz and Ammiel joined their talents together in 2009 and as the Aurelius Duo they have performed in numerous international festivals and concert series across Europe. In 2012 they obtained first prize in the International Duo Competition of the Fondation de L’Académie de Musique de Lousanne.

Sarah Thery: Sarah is from France. She has a repertoire that encompasses a wide array of genres, from oratorio and opera to the German Lied and the French mélodie. She regularly performs on opera stages, at festivals and in recitals throughout Europe and has recently formed a close collaboration with Aurelius Duo to present concerts like this one in Abbotsford.

Tickets: $20 ($10 students), at the door.
